Mozambique

Mozambique, officially the Republic of Mozambique, is a country located in South Eastern Africa bordered by the Indian Ocean to the east, Tanzania to the north, Malawi and Zambia to the northwest, Zimbabwe to the west and Swaziland and South Africa to the southwest. The country is a member of the Community of Portuguese Language Countries and the Commonwealth of Nations and an observer of the Francophonie.

Mozambique was explored by Vasco da Gama in 1498 and colonized by Portugal from 1505 until 1975. Shortly after gaining independence, Mozambique was the scene of an intense civil war lasting from 1977 to 1992. Up to a million Mozambicans died from fighting and famine in this war which ruined the economy and much of the countryside. Since the political settlement in 1992, Mozambique is now slowly working towards building stability and an economy, and is slowly positioning itself as a major tourist destination. With all it has to offer, the future looks bright.

Mozambique is the ultimate getaway destination with something for everyone and one of Africa’s up-and-coming hot-spots, with 2500km coastline waiting to be discovered, stunning beaches, excellent diving and magical offshore islands. You can go snorkelling around the Bazaruto Archipelago, sail on a dhow through mangrove channels or laze under the palms in the Quirimbas Archipelago or take an off-beat safari in the wilds of Gorongosa National Park.

Less adventurous visitors should take some time and wander along the cobbled streets of Mozambique’s capital city Maputo, sip a café espresso at one of the capital’s lively sidewalk cafés, watch the silversmiths at work on Ibo Island or dance to the country’s trademark marrabenta music.

In 2000 and 2001 Mozambique suffered serious setbacks, when it was hit by floods which affected about a quarter of the population and destroyed much of the country’s infrastructure. Poverty remains widespread, with more than 50% of Mozambicans living on less than $1 a day and Mozambique's life expectancy and infant mortality rates both among the worst ranked in the world. Also its Human Development Index is one of the lowest on earth.
