Arrival in Rwanda

DIZA, Rwanda

I have been in Rwamagana, Rwanda over a week now working with Dufatanye inshuti z’Abana (DIZA). Eric Platini, Faustin Rubayiza and Jean-Marie Kayihura met me at the airport and we went to have a Fanta in the Hill-Top hotel where they introduced themselves formally and told me a bit about their organisation.

DIZA’s primary aim is to support vulnerable and orphaned children and to find ‘god-parents’ to sponsor their education and sometimes their materials, clothes and food – depending on the child’s needs.

They received support from the International Rescue Committee (IRC) and a French association, Association Solidarité Finistère Rwanda (ASFR). ASFR continues to sponsor many children through DIZA, at the moment 109 children.

DIZA’s focus is moving gradually away from sponsoring the education of genocide survivors to including orphans of other causes (particularly AIDS) and non-orphaned children whose families lack the resources to provide them with an education. The next step for DIZA is to build a nursery and primary school which will allow them to provide high quality education to their own sponsored children and the children of the local community.

DIZA also has some revenue generating projects (which need developing) which provide much needed employment, work experience and hope in this area.

They have recently also formed a new partnership with The Rwandan Children’s Project, a newly formed NGO based in Dublin, Ireland who are going to fundraise to fund the objectives of DIZA.
