Ordering a meal in Namibia

I went to the counter and ordered my meal and proceeded to have the oddest conversation of the day.

At 12:30 I decided to seek out some lunch. The ladies in the office mentioned a fish restaurant around the corner that was reasonably priced and sold a decent fare. I was more than happy to try it out. So off I went round the corner and through the sand. Did I mention that Namibia is very sandy!! Well its mainly desert land for goodness sake..

So I saw a meal on the menu that was basically stew fish with rice.. They called it Thai Fish special!! So up I went to counter and ordered the meal and proceeded to have the oddest conversation of the day. I am still wondering what went wrong:

ME: may I have the Thai Fish please

Her: blank look

ME: may I have the Thai fish

Her: blank look again

ME: (louder this time) THAI FISH

Her: (smiling) It not ready yet. come back

ME: When shall I come back

Her: When it ready

ME: WHAT? how will I know when it is ready.. can you ask please

Her: (smiling and happy she skipped off to ask and comes back and pronounces quite sweetly) They say come back when it ready. Can you come back? I shall order it for you.. Make sure and come back when it ready!

I gave up at that point, walked out and bought two oranges from the happy vendor and went back to my desk and ate that smiling to myself at the conversation I just had. How would I know when it was ready!!!!!!!. Do Africans possess knowledge of readiness powers that I don’t know of or have.. Like the power to know when a fish meal is ready? Apparently they do as Faith the Programme Director tells me to go back around 1! It should be ready around then! I went back to the smiling woman who was happy to see me and gave me my meal with a pleasant smile and told me to come back tomorrow.
