Kyaninga Child Development Centre , Fort Portal, Uganda

Kyaninga Child Development Centre (KCDC) was founded by Fiona Beckerlegge (a physical therapist) after she identified a lack of support for children with disabilities in the Kabarole District in Western Uganda.

Until KCDC opened children had to be taken 5 hours away to Kampala to receive support.

The organiastion provides high quality, specialised and affordable physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy to children with disabilities and special needs and training, education and support to families, carers and communities in the care of children and young adults with special needs through 4 different channels:
  1. Daily individual assessment and treatment sessions
  2. Regular in-reach to 3 schools who have students with disabilities, providing training to teaching staff and individual therapy to children
  3. Community based rehabilitation through which visits are regularly made to children with disabilities living far from the centre.
  4. Community outreach in partnership with other community organisations and local health centres.
