Finance Manager in Guyana

Established UK organisation
Georgetown, Guyana
Flights and In-country expenses covered
Start: ASAP
2-8 months (Feb - Oct 2012)

Come and volunteer for a great NGO in Guyana. Our partner is looking for a volunteer to cover their current Finance Manager who will be leaving on maternity leave.

The organisation works with 4 key donors and has two EC projects, which come to an end during this time period. The office is also in transition and being matrix-managed between two organisations and is in the process of transitioning from one to the other. The rationale behind this year-long transition is to allow the 2 EC-funded projects to be completed. As part of this transition there will be a “restructure” of the office which will be implemented during this time of this placement.

Simultaneously the organisation’s programmes are also in transition from it’s now outdated 5 –year plan (CSP 2004 – 2009) to a new interim 3-year plan (2012 – 2015). This represents a transition from 4 distinct “programme areas” with 4 Programme Managers (Education, Disability, Secure Livelihoods and National Volunteering) to one core programme with opportunities for scaling up clearly identified, and consequently a shift in staffing also. The priority for the Programme Office in 2012 is to manage this transition and to acquire funding to support the scale up opportunities.

The organisation currently  has approximately 40 volunteers in country and 12 staff members – at the end of the restructure it will have 9 staff (plus 1 temporary transitional programme manager) supporting the Guyana programme and 2 staff supporting the newly created Caribbean regional “hub”.

Expectations and objectives of the placement

It is expected this placement will fulfil the role and responsibilities of the Finance Manager post during this time of transition.

Specific objectives of the placement would include:

  • Work with the Admin Assistant to manage the day-to-day accounting requirements for the office.
  • Complete the month-end accounts procedures.
  • Deliver monthly and quarterly variance reports and quarterly reforecasts.
  • Complete 2011-12 year end procedures as per requirements.
  • Deliver end of project financial reporting requirements for 2 EC projects.
  • Support the creation of budgets to support new funding proposals.
  • Support the transition to a new SUN system
  • Train the returning Finance Manager and Admin Assistant (and other staff) in the new SUN system so she can take over when the placement is completed.
  • Support the three Programme Support Officers with their monthly financial reporting procedures.
  • Coach 2 new Programme Support Officers in relation to Donor Reporting requirements and procedures.
  • Liaise with the Regional Finance Officer, the International Finance Officer and the Financial Officer.
