Angkor Hospital for Children
Siem Reap, Cambodia
In partnership with ADM Capital Foundation
Angkor Hospital for Children (AHC) aims to deliver high quality paediatric healthcare and outreach services to children affected by poverty and disease in Siem Reap Province and beyond in Cambodia. AHC strives to provide outpatient, inpatient, intensive care, surgical, HIV care and other services free of charge.
Angkor Hospital for Children also strives for Cambodian self-sufficiency through the Medical Education Centre (MEC). AHC has been officially recognized as a teaching hospital by the government of Cambodia since 2005 and the MEC provides high quality medical education to hundreds of Cambodian nurses and doctors each year. They also work to build the capacity of Cambodian paediatric nurses and doctors, strengthening the Cambodian health system through cooperation with the Ministry of Health, Provincial Health departments and local health centres. In addition, the hospital serves as a training site for the World Health Organization’s Integrated Management of Childhood Illnesses Program (IMCI).
Community outreach is provided in a variety of ways including through thier HIV/Homecare Program, Capacity Building and Health Education Program and our Nutrition Program. By strengthening patients, families and healthcare workers in their own communities, sustainable positive change is achieved. Some of Angkor’s main projects and achievements including:
- AHC was Cambodia’s first officially recognized teaching hospital and remains one of just two in the whole country.
- AHC has a 3-year medical curriculum to train new doctors in the specialty of paediatrics. The program offers Emergency Treatment and Triage (ETAT), Advanced Paediatric Life Support, Short-Term Fellowships, and English Language Training.
- The HIV/Homecare Program serves the many children who are living with chronic illness requiring frequent and consistent medical care.
- Since 1999, Angkor Hospital for Children has treated more than 800,000 children, performed over 12,000 surgeries, educated thousands of Cambodian health workers, and lifted the quality of rural healthcare in the countryside. In 2010, the AHC Satellite clinic opened at Sot Nikum Referral Hospital to bring compassionate, quality care further into Siem Reap Province.
Angkor’s commitment to improving health includes making sure that Cambodian families are educated, informed and aware of the resources to help keep their children healthy. This means providing families in-hospital support such as educational talks, cooking, and nutrition classes, as well as complete access to cooking, washing, and bathing facilities during their stay at the hospital.
Despite the impressive accomplishments of Angkor Hospital for Children, one hospital alone cannot undo decades of war, political turmoil and poverty. Significant, lasting change will only be accomplished by strengthening Cambodia’s health infrastructure from within.
