Children’s Welfare Mission
Kampala, Uganda
In partnership with Kinderhulp Afrika
The charity Children’s Welfare Mission is a Christian Aid organisation which has its focus on the most vulnerable children in Uganda – the orphans.
The children are cared for in the children’s village Namugongo. The children’s village has been working since 1992 and is now hosting around 550 children.
There they receive- next to a loving home which they deserve – all the necessary medical and spiritual care and primary and secondary / technical education so that they will be ready to become independent citizens.
The children village’s primary school has seven classes and the teachers are local. Because the children all have different backgrounds and different levels of learning, the classes are arranged by level and not by age.
Through state exams, at the end of every school-season, it will be decided if a child can go to the next class in the following school-year. At the school all the classes are taught in English, since this is the official language of Uganda.
The institute for secondary, vocational and technical training is open for children from other organisations and for children from the local community.
The charity’s core business is hosting and taking care of orphans and they have defined four pillars on which their work is based:
- Emotional care
- Physical care
- Spiritual care
- Educational care
The children’s village also has a medical clinic with a maternity ward, a dentist and a first aid department. The clinic takes care of the children in the village, but is also open to those living in the surrounding areas.
Short term objectives of the children’s village include:
- Building of 4 new class rooms
- Building of a girls dormitory
- Renovating and extending of the clinic
In the long term, the charity aims to become self-sustainable, handing the operations over to local people.
