Childs' i Foundation

In Uganda poverty, disease and violence are rife; this has lead to hundreds of babies being abandoned by desperate, vulnerable mothers every year. Child’s i Foundation is a charity working to reduce child abandonment in Uganda by supporting at-risk mothers and their extended families to enable them to care adequately for their children and by becoming the leading promoter of local adoption.

The organisation focuses on three key thematic programs in Uganda:

  • The provision of a transitional care centre that serves as a model for primary care in Uganda,
  • Family placement, including reintegration and tracing services.
  • Multi-sector preventative strategies designed to address child vulnerability at the grassroots level.

It pursues these goals through a hybrid approach that utilises direct intervention, capacity building, and advocacy at local, national and international levels.

Child's i Foundation was founded by Lucy Buck, a well-known TV producer, who was moved into action after an incident that saw her bury a 16week old baby boy, Abraham, whilst volunteering in Uganda. Abraham had been abandoned in a taxi park when he was 8-weeks old, and died of meningitis in an orphanage 8 weeks later.

Her efforts have not gone amiss. In its inaugural year, Child i's Foundation recorded 4 key achievements:

  • Establishing the Malaika Baby and Family Support Centre, a model transitional residential care centre
  • Setting up Malaika Prevention, a prevention programme that combines vocational training, counseling and empowerment for at-risk mothers
  • Implementing the Family Placement programme that facilitates and monitors either resettlement or adoption of at-risk children
  • Launching an advocacy programme focussed on building a robust network of relationships with the Ugandan government, private sector, and NGO communities and actors to help improve standards of care and practices in Uganda.
