Fair Children Youth Foundation (FCYF)

Musanze, Rwanda
In partnership with Jubilee Action, UK

Fair Children Youth Foundation (FCYF) was created in 2003 to restore human rights and to rebuild lives and communities in Rwanda. They are based in Musanze, a beautiful area in northern Rwanda that suffered excessively from the consequences of civil war, genocide and disease, more so because of its exposed location on the border with DRC and Uganda.

Their mission is to work together with all community members for their development. FCYF promotes strong community-based initiatives to solve problems and strengthen the capacity of community members - including and especially children, youth and women - to access the psycho-social, educational and economic resources they need to survive. They believe that strong mothers create strong children and youth who are the future of Rwanda. FCYF runs a Deaf Children Center, Child Heads of Household Vocational Training and Wisdom Nursery and Primary Schools.

FCYF Programmes:

  • Community awareness and education in human, child and women's rights
  • Emergency support for Aids orphans in shelter, food security, HIV testing and health care
  • Training community leaders and volunteer mentors in counseling and psycho-social support skills
  • 'Nkundabana' mentoring of child-headed households and vulnerable families in their own homes
  • Early childhood development
  • Primary schooling
  • Literacy training for older youth and women
  • Special education for deaf children and others with learning disabilities
  • Vocational training for youth, women and people affected by HIV/Aids
  • Trade associations and income generating opportunities
  • Gardening and sustainable food projects
  • Women's agricultural  and income generating cooperatives

FCYF is led by an elected volunteer board that has representatives from key local groups, including the children, youth and women that the foundation exists to serve, and an executive committee that contains both volunteer and permanent staff members. The foundation works collaboratively with other community stakeholders and is an active member of the Musanze Joint Action Forum.

Jubilee Action

Jubilee Action funds and advises expert partners working on the ground to help the world’s most vulnerable children.  Their projects reach children who would otherwise be forgotten – those who have slipped under the radar of public notice.

Their grassroots experience also provides them with the facts, first-hand evidence and expertise to campaign on behalf of the children they are working to protect. Jubilee Action's aim is to persuade the UK government and the international community to take effective action to hold countries that violate children’s rights to account.

They do this by campaigning in the media, organizing influential events and debates, issuing research and briefing politicians and opinion formers at a UK, EU and UN level.
