Nature's Gift Permaculture

Nature’s Gift Permaculture (NGP) located in the heart of Lilongwe, Malawi carries out an ethical business which follows three permaculture ethics in all aspects of their operations. The ethics - Earth Care, People Care and Fair/Surplus Share serve as their guide through the design of their land, interaction with clients and community members and payment of their staff. NGP’s 30 hectare plot of land is in a continual state of design.

Permaculture is an approach to designing human settlements and agricultural systems that mimic the relationships found in natural ecologies. It is an ethical and ecological design process.  Guided by close observation of nature and permaculture principles, permaculture designers create an overall pattern for sustainable systems.

NGP’s staff includes a mixed group of women and men from four continents with a difference of 50 years between the youngest and oldest.  They speak 7 different languages and have worked together as members of an effective team to create Nature's Gift Permaculture.

“We are united in the beliefs that Malawi is rich in both natural and human resources and that self-development with existing resources is possible within the practical mindset of permaculture design.”

NGP’s Objectives:
  • The centre aims to develop over a 5 year period to be economically self- sustainable.
  • Work towards increasing biodiversity by conserving and promoting a wide variety of indigenous fauna and flora on the farm for the last 12 years.
  • Offer a wide variety of courses related to permaculture and its subtopics.
  • Provide consulting services to individuals and organisations.
  • Create awareness and policies on permaculture research which is currently highly underrepresented in academia.
  • Carry out rigorous empirical research on inputs and yields of permaculture systems since they are both complex and abundant which make them difficult to research using conventional agriculture research techniques.

NGP’s Achievements:
  • Built a new classroom that holds 35 people after following their Thatching One course.
  • Increased the diversity of food produced while decreasing the financial and environmental cost of creating a fine dining experience.
