Puthi Komar Organisation
PKO is an NGO created by the French International organization ‘Enfants Réfugiés du Monde’ “ERM”. ERM’s work began in 1997 until 2006. Since October 2005, PKO is continuing ERM’s important work by assisting local children through managing numerous youth centre activities.
According to a 2009 UNDP report, Cambodia’s provision of education is still falling far behind other ASEAN countries. Cambodia stands at number 122 for the quality of its education, 87th for primary education level enrolment and 121st for education expenditure.
PKO has identified the following social problems:
- Children are not all able to access primary level education (such as: learning through playing)
- Children are not provided with enough psychological and social support by their families as a result of the war in Cambodia.
- Parents do not always understand the importance of education and good health care.
- Children’s education and level of health is poor.
With its team of experienced staff, PKO is working in the province of Battambang to provide educational and psychosocial support to vulnerable children. This is done via the management of four youth centres.
PKO focuses on providing children with support using non-formal education; providing the appropriate training to youth centre personnel; providing psychosocial support to the children; integrating the children back into their community; and ensuring the sustainability of the youth centres.
