SolarAid - Tanzania

Dar es Salaam,Tanzania
In partnership with SolarAid UK

Microsolar activity started in 2007 with an informal micro-solar project at Neema Crafts, Iringa, established by a pre-SolarAid John Keane. Funding was then secured from Mangroup for macro and micro solar work, which started in late 2008. In June 2008 SolarAid Tanzania was set up in response to an urgent need for renewable energies. The team began by training poor people in rural Tanzania with the business and marketing tools necessary to become SunnyMoneyentrepreneurs.

The aim of the project is to achieve self-sustainability by generating income through a microbusiness approach and also by generating carbon credits so that they can be sold on the carbon markets in order to generate more income. The project focuses on 4 key areas:

  • The micro-solar enterprise development: Establishing a network of micro-solar franchisees and kiosks, to sell and repair affordable solar products
  • The solar education project: To set in motion a wide impacting programme working with school children and teachers to instil an awareness, understanding and commitment to the utilisation of renewable energy sources.
  •  The solar school installation project: To install 300 W systems on 108 schools over four years.
  •  The health centre project: To install solar systems on 40 health clinics over 4 years
  •  The community centre project: To install solar systems on 15 community centres over 4 years

There are currently 16 active entrepreneurs with their own independent and sustainable microsolar businesses. In total, 1507 microsolar units have been sold, bringing light to thousands. SolarAid Tanzania installed their first macrosolar panelling system on a school in January 2009. Now 64 schools, health clinics and community centres have benefitted from clean and affordable energy.
