Uganda National Action on Physical Disability (UNAPD)

Kampala, Uganda
In partnership with Action on Disability and Development

Uganda National Action on Physical Disability (UNAPD) is an indigenous Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) formed to promote and protect the rights of persons with physical disabilities (PWPDs).

The PWPDs suffer discrimination, low literacy and poor living conditions due to lack of awareness and attitudes of Ugandan society including parents, service providers, policy makers and the general public.

UNAPD’s vision is ‘a society where people with physical disabilities are accorded rights enjoyed by all citizens’.

Currently, UNAPD has a membership of 40 registered District Associations with over 2000 individual registered members and 5 national thematic groups (Polio Survivors, persons with rheumatism, persons with acquired brain injury and cerebral palsy, youth and women with physical disabilities.)

UNAPD’s Objectives are:

  • Promotion of programs for rehabilitation, full social integration, and the independent living of PWPDs.
  • Promotion of equal opportunities for PWPDs.
  • Creation of awareness among the general public, government authorities and the PWPDs themselves.
  • Advocacy for full rights to medical, education and employment access.
  • Promotion of programs for the prevention of disability, and other mobility aids.
  • Creation of a forum for sharing and exchanging information on disability issues.

UNAPD’s Activities and Achievements:
  • Capacity building of UNAPD's members in advocacy and lobbying, fundraising, financial management and political structures.
  • Mobilised and established 40 affiliate member District Associations.
  • Developed National Accessibility Standards.
  • Successfully advocated for improved accessibility to public facilities as well as recognising PWPDs as potential employees.
  • Successfully implemented three mini-projects targeting mobilisation, capacity building and empowerment of the UNAPD Board and staff members.
  • Organised and held the first National Polio Survivors conference in Uganda.
