Our partner is a design and community development organisation founded in 2006. They work with residents of impoverished areas to create low cost, high-impact built environments (Productive Public Spaces) that transform communities, improving the residents’ daily lives and future prospects. All of these productive public spaces are designed built and managed by a resident group and simultaneously improves social, environmental and economic capital. To date, our partner has helped create 4 such projects in Kibera, the largest informal settlement in East Africa.

You would be the first AfID volunteer. Though they currently have strong internal controls, our partner believes that they would definitely benefit from an AfID volunteer’s support. They currently use a combination of Quickbooks, Excel and manual written accounts and would like advice on how to use the system more efficiently. The organisation would also like advice on best practice when dealing with funding from donors involving multiple currencies. Once a project is up and running, our partner need help ensuring the loans process for the microbusinesses is running smoothly and ideally they would like the volunteer to advise the loan beneficiaries on their business plans as well. They would also like assistance updating the internal procedures manual.

Please note that overseas assignments incur a placement fee as per the AfID Tailored Volunteer Programme fee scale (see FAQs for more details).
