MALAWI | Developing Sustainable Farming for Sustainable Living

An Innovative Social Enterprise needs the support of an outgoing accountant to develop secure food sources and incomes for rural communities through educational workshops

Start: Oct - Jan     Assignment length: 3 - 4 weeks     Resources: Onsite Accomm.

With an abundance of fascinating wildlife, exuberant culture and unforgettable views, Malawi is a haven for the adventurous type. As one of the smaller African nations, it has a lot to offer; but our partners in Malawi need your help to ensure that the agricultural communities can continue to survive. We have a unique opportunity for an accountant who would like to help others and see a wonderful part of the world in the process. Our partner is an ingenious social enterprise dedicated to educating agricultural communities on the methods of sustainable farming so that the longevity of their business can overcome the impact of climate change.

Our partner is in desperate need of someone with experience in the financial sector and accounting who can creatively shape their budget into a series of departmental budgets that feed back into an organisational budget. Your hands-on knowledge of budgeting would be essential to the heads of various departments as currently the team are lacking a central figure to train them effectively. Furthermore the workshops they currently run for local farmers need to be analysed to ensure they are cost-effective as they charge based on the individual farmer’s ability to pay, whilst charging a lot more for corporations or larger charities. They still need to be profitable, although naturally our partner would like to keep these costs down as much as possible. Working knowledge of QuickBooks would also be greatly appreciated in this matter.

This organisation could benefit so much from your help, as they have from the previous 3 volunteers we have placed with them. You could be working in a fun, friendly environment helping the impoverished in one of the most alluring countries in the world. Regardless of where you’re coming from, what your speciality is or your age, this is a fantastic opportunity to escape the hum-drum of everyday life and do something truly remarkable.

It may be possible for our partner to arrange for you to be picked up from the airport, but they will definitely be able to provide you with accommodation on site with a lunch for every working day. Bring your accounting skills and your sense of adventure to make the most of a brilliant chance to do some genuine good in the world.

Please note that overseas assignments, in this case Malawi, will incur a placement fee as per the AfID Tailored Volunteer Programme fee scale (see website for more details). For more information please contact us on +44 (0) 208 741 7000 or email volunteers@afid.org.uk.

Please forward our details to any accountants in your network that you think would be interested in our work as we always appreciate more support.

If you feel this particular role isn’t for you, don’t despair! We have a huge range of assignments that can be tailored to suit your needs and abilities, so feel free to get in touch for a discussion about your potential.
