CAMBODIA (Phnom Penh) | Uniting Cambodian and Vietnamese Students to Tackle Global Issues

Accountant with excellent interpersonal skills to support a youth empowerment organisation aiming to combat cultural discrimination and build a brighter future for South-East Asia.

Start: Oct - Jan     Assignment length: 4 weeks     Resources: Affordable Accomm.

Our partner is a peace-building and youth empowerment organisation which aims to inspire and empower the next generation of leaders in South-East Asia. They predominantly run summer exchange programs for Cambodian and Vietnamese university students where the students take part in service learning, group travel and leadership. Given the fraught history between both countries, our partner aims to prepare students to tackle the complex social and environmental problems of the region, collaboratively and unhindered by the memories of past conflicts or stereotypes. It is through the empowerment of the younger generations that such prejudices can be overcome and the true value of co-operation and equality can be instilled.

You will be the second AfID volunteer on assignment with our partner, the first volunteer, spent two weeks with them earlier this year. As the first volunteer, her role was to review their procedures and internal controls, assist in the creation of budgets, and review their corporate governance, grant writing and financial procedures manual.

Our partner organisation is preparing for an expansion and have requested a volunteer to assist them prepare to scale up their activities. They are hoping to create more programmes, as well as expand into new countries; for the latter, this includes Bangladesh, Japan and Myanmar. In addition to reviewing how the staff have been getting on since the departure of our first volunteer, your role will be to assess and strengthen internal controls in light of their plans for expansion. They also want support around cost-profit analysis to, firstly get an understanding of how much the programme will cost if they expand to new countries, and secondly, how the courses should be priced.

Our partner has found that their means of communicating their financial disposition is somewhat hindered by the complexities of the programmes. They would be especially appreciative if you could simplify their means of presenting their financial situation and their plans for future development in a more accessible fashion. They have emphasised the need for clear and compelling reporting, replete with charts and graphs that help to explain more intricate details to Directors and the general public alike.

You have a chance to make a real and visible difference using the skills that you may be taking for granted. Organisations of this size often lack the ability to acquire the skills that you already possess and as such your work will have a big impact on the capabilities of our partner organisation. Whether you’re looking for a new challenge, fancy a change in scenery or want to see if the international development sector is right for you then this is the perfect opportunity.

Accommodation will be provided for you and our partner has agreed to pick you up from the airport so that your adventure can begin. Please note that overseas assignments, in this case Cambodia, will incur a placement fee as per the AfID Tailored Volunteer Programme fee scale (see website for more details).
