CAMBODIA | Helping Vulnerable Children Through Creative Education

Outgoing Accountant needed to support Youth Development Organisation that aims to help the impoverished, vulnerable and homeless youth of Cambodia through creativity

Start: Oct - Jan    Assignment length: 6 – 8 Weeks     Resources: Affordable Accomm.

Cambodia is one of the fastest developing nations in SE Asia, but there is still a long way to go and there are still thousands of children living in poverty or on the streets. Our partner has developed an innovative way of addressing this issue; by combining formal education with creative classes which include breakdancing, beatboxing, music production and artistic development. The aim of these programmes is to give children a chance to fulfil their potential and empower them with the confidence, skills and environment that they need to do this. This in turn helps keep them away from the drugs, crime and prevalence of HIV/AIDS that is rife in the impoverished communities, instead giving them a chance to choose their own destiny.

Our partner has hired a new finance manager who begins in October, however the organisation would be very grateful for an AfID volunteer to mentor their new finance manager, but also help to train the general manager in financial matters. The organisation has been supported by four volunteers from AfID so far, with one of them staying on as the treasurer for a time. This past volunteer has since left Cambodia and although they are willing to support the organisation remotely, our partner has requested another volunteer to help re-implement financial controls and procedures, with special focus on segregation of duty and purchasing controls. If there is time, our partner would very much appreciate it if you could create a basic Financial Procedures Manual so that all new staff can be brought up to speed effectively and efficiently.

Their previous treasurer (AfID past volunteer) will be on hand to assist you remotely and provide you with an in-depth knowledge of the organisation’s financial history, but the staff they currently have are relatively junior and could really benefit from the guidance of a skilled professional. Much of the work will be rather basic accounting and mentoring the general manager, the new finance manager and the finance staff to ensure that the organisation can continue to deliver its fantastic programme of youth development.

This is your chance to make a tangible difference to the lives of those less fortunate, our previous volunteers have noted how much fun they had getting involved with our partner’s programmes. Our partner’s work is truly inspiring and grants deserving children a chance for a brighter future that otherwise would not be available. As such we need a fun-loving, outgoing qualified accountant to help this fantastic cause.

Please note that overseas assignments, in this case Cambodia, will incur a placement fee as per the AfID Tailored Volunteer Programme fee scale (see website for more details).
