Finance Director | East and Southern Africa (London based) | c£60K + Benefits

About the role
The Finance Director is responsible for supporting the region to achieve sustainable growth through improved financial management and performance. The role will work closely with the Regional Director and Finance Directors in the region, proactively identify financial gaps and weaknesses. The role will influence and work with country finance teams to create rigorous solutions, ensuring they are implemented and maintained correctly.
 
With a team of 3 reports based in the region you will have the opportunity to build capacity in the country finance teams, bringing your exceptional financial acumen to make our social enterprise more effective.
 
You will have overall responsibility for the financial management in the country programmes.
 
About you
We are seeking a proactive finance professional who is experienced in a multi geographical environment. You will have built the capacity of remote finance teams, ideally in developing countries context, influencing at a senior level to ensure financial rigour.
 
Key Responsibilities
 
Ensure that Eastern Southern Africa (ESA) financial systems are fit for purpose 
• Ensure that ESA systems for collecting and reporting financial data are effective and proportionate
• Identify gaps in country reviews and provide leadership in closing those gaps 
• Identify gaps in country business plans and provide leadership in closing the gaps
• Improve financial management capacity in the region
• Provide quality assurance on financial data
• Help to implement process improvement strategies across the ESA region
 
Support and advise finance directors in ESA region
• Responsibility for the professional development of the finance directors and senior finance managers in the country programmes 
• Induct finance directors on the multifaceted aspects of finance
• Support finance directors to use and comply with systems
• Identify and disseminate best practice in financial management and reporting in an international setting
• Provide direct support to the finance director in country programmes – including travel to the region
 
Provide strategic analysis and advice to the Regional Director and senior management
• Assure and support donor, financial, legal and contractual compliance in country programmes; identify gaps in control and non-compliance; and develop action plans and provide leadership in closing those gaps.
• Scrutinise and make recommendations on business plans, investment proposals & quarterly forecasts
• Oversee audit arrangements, both internal and external, and monitor implementation of recommendations from these audits
• Identify trends, beacons of success and financial risks requiring management attention
• Analyse financial data across the region to provide an overview for the RD and senior management

• Manage the regional team budget
• Maintain strong functional links to the global finance team in London
 
People management
• Recruit and induct regional finance advisers x 3 (based in programmes)
• Ensure that the regional finance team is fit for purpose
• Lead, inspire and support regional finance advisers to provide effective and timely support to country programmes
• Contribute to the recruitment and appraisal of country Finance Directors
• Establish and monitor progress of regional finance team’s KPIs
 
Skills and Experience
 
Qualifications
• Qualified accountant
• Degree-educated or equivalent
 
Experience
• Leadership of teams – including building capacity amongst direct reports
• Working within a finance function within a commercial or social business
• Working in developing markets, particularly in Africa
• Working with donors and supporting bidding for donor grants (not essential)
• Working with colleagues in geographically separate locations
 
Skills
• Ability to produce, deliver and present meaningful financial analysis and recommend appropriate actions to enhance organisational performance
• Ability to initiate, develop and maintain relationships with their staff, peers and external stakeholders at a senior level
• Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing, including with people who do not have a background in finance
• SUN accounts (ideally), Vision XL and Excel skills

Some overseas travel may be required. Salary is c£60K + pension and benefits
