Mexico | Education & Research based Human Rights Charity

Education and human rights charity needs a dynamic accountant to help set up system

Start: July    Assignment Length: 2-4 Weeks    Resources: Accommodation    Req'd: Fluent Spanish

Our partner is a development, education and research based charity. They believes that information is power, and works with local NGOs to build their awareness and capacity to deal with human rights violations. They are dedicated to promoting the transparency of government or corporate programmes, especially for those NGOs who are sponsored by such bodies, to ensure that the money raised is not at the expense of human rights. Their work is largely based around research, advocacy and their Online Portal.

Our partner is  based almost entirely in Mexico, but has run some small programmes in Brazil and Argentina, with a view to expanding in the future. The Director, and accounting staff are in Mexico City, but the organisation is registered in the US for fundraising purposes, and the local Mexican staff are struggling to make sense of the US accounts system.

You will be the first AfID volunteer, and your role will be akin to undertaking a general assessment of their current processes and controls, identifying any weaknesses, and implementing any recommendations that you deem necessary. You will assist the bookkeeper in centralising the US and Mexican accounts, ensuring they are complying to both countries' laws whilst doing so. They are currently using MS Excel which they would like some training in, but are also hoping to start working with Quickbooks, your help would therefore be useful there too.

Finally, they would like some training in donor reporting, and budget to actual reporting. Fluent Spanish speaker is required for this role.

Please note that overseas assignments, in this case Mexico, will incur a placement fee as per the AfID Tailored Volunteer Programme fee scale (see website for more details).
