Guatemala | Agricultural org. helping with sustainable farming

Our partner works with local farmers in rural Guatemala, helping them to try out new farming technologies and techniques over year-long trial periods, and if they work well they then help to implement the techniques throughout the farmers’ lands. This organisation promotes various kinds of sustainable farming, and also works alongside the Guatemalan government to implement their farming policies, and with single women, teaching them about food sustainability.

You will be the second AfID volunteer. Last year, a volunteer supported them for a month, and did an initial assessment of their internal controls, and worked on improving the organisation's use of Quickbooks, enabling them to use it for reporting and day to day tracking more efficiently. He also offered training on MS Excel to the staff, and recommended any other improvements to their processes, which he deemed necessary at the time.

Since his placement, there has been some restructuring with the staff, and there is a new Director of Monitoring, Evaluation and Grants in place. In the last year, our partner has been awarded a 3 year grant, on the basis that they undergo yearly financial audits from the donor. The first of these audits will be in August 2015, so the director would like your support in assisting him and the Administrative Accountant in preparing for this audit. The ideal volunteer would have experience not only in audit and managing financial documents, but also in human resources, specifically in the establishment of policies that determine how money is spent. You would assist with identifying any discrepancies in these policies and in their financial controls, to ensure all is in place for the August audit.

This assignment would ideally last between 2 and 4 weeks between June and July. Affordable accommodation is provided. Spanish speaking candidates ideally.

Please note that overseas assignments, in this case Guatemala, incur a placement fee as per the AfID Tailored Volunteer Programme fee scale (see FAQs for more details).
