MOZAMBIQUE | Organisation Working to Improve Water Access, Sanitation and Hygiene

Our partner has offices in several countries, but each country office is fairly independently run. The main focus in Mozambique is providing points for fresh, clean water, and support to up to 1500 mothers in the area, promoting the importance of hygiene, and preventing infant mortality. Through the provision of clean water, and the education of its importance, our partner helps to limit the number of child mortalities, brought on by water or hygiene related illness such as malnutrition and diarrhoea.

In 2010, they received support from an accountant from the UK, who set up some fairly comprehensive systems for them. However, since then, the accounts have been run by local staff members, who lack the knowledge to keep the systems going. They previously always had a part time bookkeeper which has added to the pressure of keeping things up to date. They now have a full time bookkeeper and our partner would appreciate training for not only this full time accountant, but also for the project staff, so that they do not need to rely so much on this one member of staff.

The first AfID volunteer conducted a Financial Health Check and recommended best ways for improvement; reviewed financial procedures and controls; produced a year-end finance report; prepared for an external audit; trained the bookkeeper on accounting systems and the budget holders on finance management and worked on cash-flow forecasting, cash management and financial planning linked to the new budget

As the second AfID volunteer your role will involve improving internal controls to make sure that assets are safeguarded, accounting records are accurate and up to date, fraud and errors are prevented and detected and staff are protected as well as conducting a Financial Health Check and providing finance training to budget holders and bookkeeper to work through all the stages of the financial cycle.

The assignment will be for around 2 months in duration. A homestay option at the Directors home is available for a small cost to cover food.  A Portuguese speaker is desirable but not essential.

Please note that overseas assignments, in this case Mozambique, incur a placement fee as per the AfID Tailored Volunteer Programme fee scale (see FAQs for more details).
