NICARAGUA | Organisation Working with Vulnerable Communities to Achieve Sustainable Change

Our partner was founded over 40 years ago by a Doctor- Baptist pastor after the 1972 earthquake which destroyed Managua.  They started with emergency response programmes such as providing meals and shelter to people in Managua. In the 1980’s they were involved in the peace process after the civil war that shook Nicaragua. Latterly they have shifted focus to work with rural communities in Nicaragua over the long-term to improve sustainability.

Our partner currently works in partnership with vulnerable communities in Nicaragua to create sustainable, holistic change. They work in 40-50 communities at a time for 5-year cycles. Their work is divided into a variety of programmes which includes sustainable community organisation; women’s entrepreneurial development; food security and environmental protection; primary and secondary education and support for refugees.

You would be the first AfID volunteer and your role will include undertaking a general assessment of our partner’s current processes and financial controls, identifying any weaknesses, and recommending and implementing any changes which you deem necessary.

As with many of our South American partners, a Spanish speaker is required. They are looking for a volunteer to start as soon as possible, and can be flexible in regards to the length of assignment. Accommodation is offered free of charge.

Please note that overseas assignments, in this case Nicaragua, incur a placement fee as per the AfID Tailored Volunteer Programme fee scale (see FAQs for more details).
