Kidogo, Nairobi, Kenya

Kidogo is a social enterprise which provides access to high-quality and affordable early childhood care and education to low-income communities around Nairobi. They envision a world where every child has an opportunity to reach their full potential regardless of their birthplace.

The organisation provides early years care and education to enable children to reach their full potential, providing all the building blocks children need to develop at an achievable cost of less than $1 a day per. Kidogo’s high quality and affordable day-care allows working parents to maintain gainful employment and prevents older siblings being taken out of school for childcare responsibilities. They currently run 2 hubs in Kibera and Kangemi slums, just outside Nairobi and reach about 150-250 children daily.

They use a ‘hub and spoke’ structure to build a network of day-care centres and preschools in urban informal settlements/slums. Their ‘hubs’ are centres of excellence and examples for the communities of what good quality care and education looks like. They are currently piloting their ‘spoke’ model, where they support local women to start and grow their own childcare microbusinesses using the hubs as the central support structure.
