Solar Links Initiative, Iganga, Uganda

Solar Links Initiative brings affordable home solar lighting systems to particularly marginalized off-grid rural communities in East Africa in a sustainable, replicable and scalable model with full local ownership and accountability, and measurable impact. The current programmes are in the Karamoja District of North Eastern Uganda, where their main partner is The Mivule Trust.

The organization is introducing affordable and sustainable community-wide solar home-lighting systems to subsistence farming households through not-for-profit loan financing as a revolving fund. They have 2000 beneficiary households of the traditionally nomadic and pastoralist Karamojong, in Moroto, Kotido, Kaabong and Karenga. These are the most excluded and underdeveloped communities in Uganda, suffering severe poverty and standing at 63.5% in the Human Poverty Index, compared to the national average of 37.5%.
