Kate came to share her experiences with us at one of our Workshops. See her presentation here.
Past volunteer, Kate Emery is an ACA accountant with 15 years of experience working in accounting and finance. Kate undertook a six week volunteer placement with AfID from November 2014 when she travelled to Peru to support Helping Overcome Obstacles Peru (HOOP).
“Volunteering is different for different people but someone in my industry can have a really positive impact. You can pass on important technical knowledge and leave [the staff] with more confidence. I’ve got something different on my CV… if I decide to look at the charity sector, AfID placements are really well respected”
On her placement, Kate expanded HOOP’s MS Excel system and trained the Director in the use of the programme, as well as assisting with the creation of budgets, policy documents, and budget to actual reporting. In addition, Kate helped some of the organisation’s beneficiaries with their businesses.
Kate says “I had a great time. I was still using my brain but in completely different surroundings, making new friends, and travelling at weekends”.
