Our partner, an established UK charity uses the law to seek justice and reparation for survivors of torture, to combat impunity for governments and individuals who perpetrate torture, and to develop and promote compliance with international standards.

 

They bring legal cases on behalf of individual survivors, and advocate for better laws to provide effective reparations. Their cases respond to torture as an individual crime in national and international law, as a civil wrong with individual responsibility, and as a human rights violation with state responsibility.

The charity is recruiting new trustees to join our Board, to assist with the governance and strategic development of the charity. As the charity develops a new 2025 strategy the Board will have a critical role during an exciting period of cautious growth.

They particularly welcome applications from individuals with expertise in the following areas, to complement the existing skills of our Board:

  • Financial management experience, particularly in a charitable environment.
  • Fundraising experience in the charitable sector.
  • Media experience.

The Board of Trustees meets four times a year. Trustees will also be invited to join one or more committees to support the work of the Charity. There is an induction process for new trustees.

All candidates are expected to have:

  • A strong commitment to human rights, and the rights of survivors of torture in particular.
  • Strong communication and inter-personal skills.
  • A clear understanding of the role of a trustee (further guidance will be provided).
  • Ability to work well as part of a team.
  • A commitment to participate and join meetings as needed.

Prior board level or management experience in either a business or charitable setting is desirable, but not essential.

Our partner, an international healthcare organisation, has been working to make healthcare accessible to the rural and marginalised populations in the countries in which operates.

In Mexico, they operate a hospital and a number of rural clinics; additionally, the train community health workers to serve as a bridge between their communities and the clinics/hospitals. These health workers specialise in areas including maternal health, depression, diabetes, and high blood pressure.

Due to the rural location of the hospital and clinic, they have found it difficult to attract and retain qualified, experienced accountants. They are seeking a pro bono advisor review and strengthen their controls, accounting & financial management processes, and coach their bookkeeper.

They are seeking a qualified, experienced accountant able to offer 3-5 hours/week for 2-3 months. Advanced/fluent Spanish is required for this role.

Our partner works with women in rural Uganda, training them in creating and producing jewellery; and offering them skills in running a business, marketing, budgeting & management. They seek a pro bono accountant to support them in creating robust accounting, reporting and inventory management systems.
 

They empower female entrepreneurs to earn sustainable livelihoods. The jewellery the women make in the two years of their apprenticeship is sold, and a part of the salary that the women earn from their employment is used to create savings from which the women are able to establish their own independent enterprises. 

They have a complex set-up with entities in the UK, USA and Uganda to support their programmatic work and to sell the jewellery produced. They are seeking the support of a pro bono accounting and finance advisor to:

  • Support them in establishing an accounting system that will enable the financial reporting to be split between the programmatic and trade elements of their work.
  • Create a stock management system that records raw materials, partially and full made items (including wastages) and sales, samples and wastages in the USA and UK.
  • Training the Uganda bookkeeper in implementing and using the systems.

They anticipate a 2-4 week commitment, and are open to those able to offer their support on a part-time basis.

The UK’s maternity rights charity dedicated to promoting, protecting and enhancing the rights of all pregnant women, new mothers and their families to employment, social security and health care seeks new Treasurer. 

They are a small national charity based on feminist principles and human rights providing online information and telephone advice on maternity rights at work and maternity benefits, and the rights of migrant and asylum seeking women.
  
They answer 2,500 calls each year and parents view our online information sheets over 80,000 times each month. They have an active programme of campaigning to better protect pregnant women, new mothers and their families and promote their health and wellbeing. During COVID19  the charity has played a leading role in delivering up to date advice on employment rights and benefits for pregnant women and campaigning to better protect women at work and in the COVID19 support schemes.

They are recruiting a Treasurer; seeking an individual with a commitment to womens rights and race and gender equality to assist the trustees to carry out their financial responsibilities. The Treasurer will present financial reports to the board and advise on financial governance.

Accounting qualifications are desirable but not essential.
They are particularly interested in candidates from diverse ethnic backgrounds 

Trustees are expected to attend four meetings a year, usually 5:30-7:30pm on a weekday evening at our offices in Finsbury Park, London, and our Annual General Meeting. Trustees are also expected to participate in some email-based discussions between meetings.

They are looking to appoint a new Honorary Treasurer as the current postholder stands down this year. The Treasurer will provide advice, support and guidance to the charity.

Key Tasks:

  • Oversee the financial affairs of the society, ensuring compliance with legal, constitutional and Charity Commission guidelines.

Our partner is a human rights' organisation working in partnership with people affected by poverty since 1968. The organisation concentrates its efforts on aiding families by providing advocacy, crisis support, skills training, respite stays and the opportunity to develop a voice to influence government economic and social policy, in order to promote public awareness of the reality of extreme poverty.

They are looking for a Trustee, Treasure or both to be a non-salaried member of the board of directors with joint responsibility with the other 8 directors for complying with the Company’s Articles of Association and the law, acting in the best interests of the organisation, managing resources responsibility, and acting with reasonable care and skill.

The successful candidate will have prior Board experience of legal and financial matters in a company context, as well as sympathy with the objectives of the organisation.

Our partner uses participatory theatre as a tool to empower migrant, refugee and displaced populations to overcome the trauma of forced displacement and both take advantage of and contribute to their host communities.

They are looking to recruit a Trustee able to guide and implement on the financial management and legal compliance of the organisation, as well as offer around 1 day per month of accounting and HR support to ensure they set up best practice within the organisation.

They would love for the post holder to to be an active part of the organisation and be able to also potentially train their refugee facilitators in budgeting, financial management for projects and empower them to be competent leaders in their communities.

Currently, the organisation is very much in start up mode, with about seven freelance workers and a skeleton board. This would allow the post holder to have a real influence in the growth of the organisation.

Our partner is an independent, local charity that provides information, advice and support to the residents in South West London. Working in partnership with community, social and faith networks, they help thousands of people a year.

Several Trustees are likely to retire from the Board over the course of the next year and they have identified a set of skills and experience that would benefit the organisation. As part of this, they are looking for someone with a finance / accountancy background and an interest in becoming their Treasurer when the current postholder steps down in 2020.

Key responsibilities

  • Leading on Finance Committee meetings to discuss finances in more detail
  • Explain, guide and advise the board on the key assumptions and financial implications of budgets, operational and strategic plans
  • Ensure that the organisation has an appropriate reserves policy and a realistic budget that meets the services’ needs
  • Supporting any paid finance officer to explain, guide and advise on the approval of budgets, accounts and financial statements with the organisation’s framework
  • Present accounts at the Annual General Meeting (AGM) in an accessible way for volunteers and staff
  • Ensure that annual accounts are prepared in compliance with SORPAccounting for Charities and submitted by the deadline to the Charity Commission and/or Registrar of Companies, and make arrangements for them to be audited or independently examined as required
  • Keep the board informed about its financial duties and responsibilities
  • Monitor the organisation’s income and expenditure position and in conjunction with any paid finance officer present accessible reports at least quarterly to ensure board members understand the accounts and implications
  • Understand the accounting procedures and key internal controls to be able to assure the board that the charity's financial integrity is sound

Trustee Board meetings and Finance Committee meetings usually take place in the evenings and the time commitment required is likely to be 4-5 hours quarterly, plus time to prepare for these.

Advisory Role at Children's Charity working across Africa [412]

Our partner works closely with people to ensure their work creates lasting change and helps them to lift their whole family and community out of poverty. They fund their programmes with innovative businesses alongside traditional fundraising.
 

Every programme that they design has two aims. It should improve the lives of children for the long term and it should also teach the organisation how to work better. They want to one day become a research and development hub for the sector - so they're all about collecting evidence and testing ideas.

They are looking for a volunteer to help with ad-hoc accounting and tax support, ideally for a few hours a month (i.e. to come to the office for a morning or afternoon at a time).

Their questions tend to relate to general accounting (e.g. checking end of year adjustments, queries about how to treat unusual transactions), VAT (including TOMs), and intercompany/group accounting.

Knowledge/experience of board governance, budgeting and internal financial processes would also be helpful.
