Pro Bono Financial Reviews

AfID offers short, structured pro bono financial reviews delivered by experienced finance professionals. These reviews provide organisations with an independent perspective on their financial systems, sustainability and internal controls, along with practical recommendations for improvement.

They are designed for organisations that would benefit from a focused review of their financial management but may not have the resources to commission a full consultancy assignment.

Reviews are delivered remotely and are typically completed over a short period of time.

Types of Financial Review

AfID currently offers two types of pro bono financial review:

Financial Sustainability Review (FSR)

The Financial Sustainability Review focuses on the long-term financial resilience of the organisation.

The review typically includes analysis of:

  • income sources and funding structure
  • cost base and expenditure patterns
  • financial planning and forecasting
  • financial risks and sustainability challenges
  • The outcome is a structured set of practical recommendations to help organisations strengthen financial sustainability and plan for the future.

Finance Health Check (FHC)

The Finance Health Check provides a broad review of the organisation’s financial systems, processes and controls.

This may include reviewing:

  • accounting systems and processes
  • financial policies and procedures
  • budgeting and reporting practices
  • internal controls and governance arrangements

The review identifies areas where financial systems can be strengthened and provides clear, proportionate recommendations to help organisations prioritise improvements and build donor confidence.

How the reviews are delivered

Financial reviews are carried out by experienced finance professionals from AfID’s network of qualified accountants.

Reviews are delivered remotely and involve a combination of document review, discussions with relevant staff, and structured analysis.

At the end of the review, the organisation receives a short report summarising findings and recommendations.

Who these reviews are for

Pro bono financial reviews can be particularly useful for organisations that:

  • want an independent assessment of their financial systems
  • are preparing for growth or increased donor funding
  • want to strengthen internal controls and governance
  • are reviewing their financial sustainability
