PERU | NGO Working to Educate Disadvantaged Children and their Families

Our partner was founded around 6 years ago, and focuses on the education of disadvantaged children and their families, in the Flora Tristan community of Arequipa. They run daily classes for children, teaching English, health awareness, and offering support with school work. They provide after-school sessions, and work with around 100 students aged between 3 and 20 years old.

They also runs classes for mothers, including English and finance classes, offering support and advice to help mothers set up small businesses. Due to the high number of tourists in Arequipa, many of the local parents work in tourism, so English is an essential tool for them.

Our partner hopes to develop its community development programmes, and is planning to turn itself into a sort of Community Centre, with a kitchen and vocational training facilities, including knitting classes for mothers, who can then sell their products in the typical Peruvian wool that is so popular with tourists. The organisation is completely supported by the Flora Tristan community, and their work is largely designed around the needs and requests of the community members.

You would be third volunteer at our partners and your role will be akin to doing a formal review of the internal controls; reviewing the amortization accounting policy and creating recurring transactions to ensure amortization expense is recorded monthly; documenting a procurement process and setting up limits for which a bidding process is required to ensure that organization gets the best value for the price paid; assisting the Director in creating a strategic plan, preparing a calendarized budget for 2016 and reviewing the guidance of recording transactions.

The assignment will be for 4 weeks, starting in November. Accommodation is available at guesthouses and hostels. Please note that a Spanish speaker is not an essential requirement.

Please note that overseas assignments, in this case Peru, incur a placement fee as per the AfID Tailored Volunteer Programme fee scale (see FAQs for more details).
