"AfID’s offering perfectly suited my need for adventure and desire to fulfil my civic responsibility. My two month placement in Myanmar provided me with a cultural experience and sense of satisfaction unmatched elsewhere in my accounting career. I look back on my time there with fondness and now look forward to future opportunities with AfID."

"My experience in Uganda was very fulfilling. It reminded me of how lucky we are to live in a developed country, but also showed me that people can still be very happy no matter how poor they are. The staff were very nice and helpful and the animal safari I did excellent. I was glad I was able to help them in a small way with their accounting and presentation skills too."

"In July 2017 I spent three weeks in Phnom Penh, Cambodia with All Ears Cambodia. I loved the country, the people and being able to use my knowledge and skills to help a charity and the community. The placement gave me the opportunity to learn about an organisation operating in a different country and I was able to visit the clinic and the lab to see the work they do. Being placed through AFID was seamless, they took my preferences, budget and skills and presented me with options which fitted my requests. Before and during my placement they provided an abundance of helpful information and also checked in to ensure that everything was on track. One of the parts I really loved was being able to connect with other volunteers on placement in Cambodia at the same time as me. I would definitely do a placement through AFID again and am always hoping that my personal circumstances will align to that opportunity"

"I was made welcome by the lovely team of people and found accommodation in the centre of the city where I was able to meet both tourists and locals. The respect for my comments and genuine interest from my colleagues was flattering. This is a wonderful way of travelling. Going out for lunch with people in the office, not only the accounting staff, gives you a huge insight that is not available to the normal traveller. I am still in contact with people who I met there and exchanging jokes about the coffee and other shared priorities."

“Volunteering with AfID was one of the most rewarding experiences of my professional career to date. Whilst I had reservations about the relevance of my experience to the needs of AfID’s partners, they matched my skill set perfectly with the needs of a partner organisation in Nairobi, Kenya. Furthermore, I was provided plenty of materials and support to ensure I was adequately equipped to deliver maximum value."

“I had always planned to do the volunteering but the timing of work contracts made it difficult. I appreciated the flexibility that AFID offered especially with regards to short term assignments. This meant that when one work contract was coming to an end I was able to find a volunteer placement of suitable length in a country of my choice volunteering in a field that appealed to me. The information and support provided by AFID was excellent especially the very specific insights from past volunteers. I am looking forward to when my current work contract ends and I can do another volunteer placement.”

"I found AFID on the CPA website while i was looking for volunteer roles in accounting. After i read about the work that other accountants were doing in developing countries, i became interested in helping and give back in a non-for profit organisation. So i did my first volunteering in Cambodia for an organisation which promotes cultural arts. The team at AFID was very supportive. My whole trip was very planned. I had initial communication with the Cambodia team before leaving Australia. Upon my arrival, i found my way around very easily and received a warm welcome from the local team. I felt very safe and in good hands. I have learnt so much from my experience working in the finance team in a different cultural environment. I felt happy that i have been able to contribute to the vision at Cambodian's living Arts . I also had the opportunity to travel interstate with the local staff to attend cultural dance shows and learnt about the Cambodian history and culture. I made lots of new friends and still keep in touch with the team in Cambodia through Facebook. I really enjoyed my experience and would definitely participate in another assignment through AFID in the future."
