ISS is an organisation that works for community empowerment in the Surkhet district in Mid-Western Nepal. Their projects include: maternal and reproductive health programmes, HIV/AIDS prevention projects, civic education, community mental health and psychosocial support and income generation projects through cooperatives. ISS is unique in that it is owned and driven by grassroots communities within local villages. Village development committees provide a forum for providing feedback to ISS, disseminating information and building capacity.

Emily (qualified CIMA, 2012) is a past AfID volunteer, currently working for the Science and Innovation Network. She spent 2 months in 2012 supporting the Interdependent Society Surkhet (ISS) in Surkhet, Nepal.

Emily was the second AfID volunteer on assignment with ISS and her placement was primarily to assist Bibek Shahi, the Executive Manager, with donor reporting, website development, creating funding proposals and also to help him with issues around their accounting software. She stayed with Bibek and his family and even helped him with coaching for his TOEFL exam! Bibek was very appreciative of Emily’s efforts and has since recommended AfID to another organisation in Surkhet, the Environment Development Society (EDS).

Emily kindly took the time to present at our workshop.
