Proyecto Chavaladas, Leon, Nicaragua

Proyecto Chavaladas help to rehabilitate street children who have become addicted to drugs and are living in especially difficult circumstances. The organisation provides the children with the opportunity to work towards reintegration into family and school through a comprehensive intervention programme which includes prevention and awareness of these issues.

Everyday the Chavaladas Centre welcomes around 60 children ages 6 to 18. Here they find psychological and academic support, temporary housing, and love from professional social workers, psychologists, and volunteers. The organization also focuses on social reintegration and organizes events and daily activities for the children in order to try to get them to connect to a “normal” life. The staff ensure the children eat a proper lunch so that they are able to fully participate in classes at the school, as well as in sports, manual activities and craft sessions.

In addition to providing dedicated support to the chidlren, the centre also coordinates activities with the parents. This includes a “School for Parents”, which is held every six months, specialising in specific skills for the parents to better care for the emotional or psychological needs of children.
